Over a decade ago, I built an email list of 2,400 subscribers and decided to quit because of a month of low sales.
My younger brain saw the dip and short circuited.
Someone should have slapped me and said “no, don’t do that” because that list could have been 240,000 by now.
Because this popped in my mind this morning, I wanted to share some tidbits of advice my former self could have benefited (and profited) from.
Here are 17 online biz tips in no particular order:
- Focus on serving people, not just making money
- Spend more time figuring out your ideal customer
- Offers and angles can change, but your email list is forever
- Learn and develop actual marketing skills instead of copying what others are doing
- Study the base principles of online business instead of the current tactic
- No marketing method is ever truly “dead” so don’t fall for it
- There will be highs and lows, push through both of them to build something real
- Understand the difference between selling and pitching
- Become an online biz data scientist, run experiments, and aim to improve
- Flow with algorithm changes instead of letting them ruin your day or entire biz
- Do not get caught up in “Multiple Level Marketing” or fall for “passive income”
- Spend more time learning how to write good emails
- Read The Ultimate Sales Letter by Dan Kennedy at least 10 times
- Don’t be ashamed to have big goals in life
- Celebrate small wins on your way to your big goals
- Turn sticking points and slow periods into learning opportunities
- Put all your focus into building your email list
Okay, okay… I’m starting to realize I could easily add another 83 and turn every single one of those into their own dedicated piece of content.
But we can essentially summarize everything I’ve shared so far into a few key things:
Learn and improve essential skills, build your email list, and never give up.
If you want more bite-sized insights like this, let me know and I can do a part 2.
