I’m all for running a coaching business around a skill, interest, or even hobby you have, but it takes a certain type of person to do it right.
Every week I come across some story about a coach who scams people out of their hard earned money, and while internet commenters can be unhinged…
There’s often some level of truth to it.
Does the method they teach work? Probably.
Did they start their business with good intentions? Maybe.
Is every single client going to get their desired result? Probably not.
So does that mean their program is a scam? Definitely not.
However…
So many people bought into the coaching craze of some years back and the problem is so many of them simply do not want to be coaches.
They want the money that coaches can be paid, but the model itself is a mismatch with their personality.
Coaching isn’t just about giving information, structure, templates, and answering questions.
It also requires the ability to see mistakes people are making and get people on the correct path in a way they’re willing to receive.
I got this line from Vince Rieck and it sums up coaching perfectly (paraphrased):
“Coaching is 90% calling people out on their BS and having them do things they already know they need to do, and 10% filling knowledge gaps as they appear.”
My advice?
Don’t start coaching unless you want to actually coach people, regardless of how much money some guru who “coaches coaches to coach coaching coaches” says you can make.
