How I’m Fixing My Big Fat FOMO Problem

I’ve spent more time on the internet than I’d like to admit, but it makes sense considering I’m building one of those internet businesses.

And therein lies the beginning of a problem…

Since I post a lot of internet business content and view a lot of internet business content, the algorithms show me more and more of it.

“Make millions with YouTube”

“Passive income with Instagram”

“How to become a ghostwriter on X”

“Threads to millions”

“Make a full-time income with blogging”

And the list goes on and on…

Now most people get that fear of missing out, aka FOMO, about the method itself…

But for me?

I see people winning bigly on every platform and start to think…

“Oh I should probably be on there to build my email list and get customers”

In 2024, I was building my fitness business by:

  • Sending a daily email
  • Posting it on my blog
  • Importing my blog to Medium
  • Posting on X and Threads
  • Posting on Reels, Shorts, TikTok, Facebook
  • Posting on YouTube

The messed up part is most of it was going nowhere slow.

Instagram, YouTube, and email were doing okay in between random bouts of hate comments, but the rest?

Well… I was posting everywhere because:

“What if my next post does really well?”

A whole lot of sunk cost fallacy was clouding my judgement.

It’s like keeping that employee on payroll who underperforms, causes drama, and constantly shows up late or leaves early, just because of time spent training them and they might decide to do better one day…

Let’s be real here:

It’s probably not worth it.

More recently, I made the tough decision to let my YouTube channel go after 13 years of posting, even though it’s made me thousands of dollars and would have finally crossed 1M lifetime views this year.

In fact, I let everything go that doesn’t fit my schedule so I don’t have to stress about finding time in this current, somewhat chaotic season of life.

In the name of focus, all I’m doing is this:

  • Daily email
  • Daily blog post
  • X and Threads
  • eBook to Skool funnel

And saying “no” to every other platform no matter how well anyone else is doing there.

The biggest shift on how I’m fixing my FOMO problem is this:

Instead of thinking I should be on XYZ platform because some guru is having record months there, or someone I respect proclaims a platform sucks and I shouldn’t be on it, I’ve been thinking:

“How can I take what they’re doing and apply it to what I’m doing?”

Just like that, my desire to be everywhere has diminished to the point where I finally feel like I can focus on my own path so much better.

And the only changes I’ll make will be within the confines of the path I’ve chosen.

For example, the price of The Blueprint is going up at the end of the month and I’m likely taking away the free plan in my community on March 31st.

But the whole structure of my content plan and sales funnel is staying the same.

In any case, I’ve said a lot of words here that probably could have just been a tweet.

If there’s anything you can take from this, it’s to pick your path, put the blinders on, and reject distractions so you can focus on what you truly want.
