The Struggle To Keep Things Simple In A Digital Product Business

One of the coolest things about a digital product business is also one of the biggest problems:

There are roughly a million and one ways you can run it.

In one corner, you have the high ticket programs with book-a-call funnels, sales teams, operations staff, SDRs, SOPs, AOVs, PPCs and LMNOPs…

And in the other corner, you have a solo business with traffic, an email list, and an offer.

While there’s no wrong answer, being a busy dad working full time and being a handyman, dog trainer, online chess player, and my own fitness coach on the side…

I’m not interested building a business that requires MORE hours than my 9-5.

(which is really a 9-7… 8-8 including commute)

But even then…

It’s still easy to overcomplicate the solo approach:

-Trying to build multiple kinds of social media platforms

-Running an ebook funnel… no a course funnel… no, wait…

-Setting up automations and playing around with AI

There are too many options with too little time to try them all.

After many conversations since July of this year, it’s a common issue so many digital product business owners are facing.

And with the way the market is shifting, I’m starting to think there’s only one real solution which is to find your own way to get your audience to consume long form content.

Some ways you could do this are:

  • Short videos -> YouTube -> Product
  • Short text posts -> Email list -> Product
  • Articles -> Product
  • YouTube -> Product

And when you find your content type you want to focus on, then post on every platform it makes sense to:

For example…

  • You could post short text posts on X, Threads, LinkedIn, Facebook and even the YouTube community tab.
  • For short videos, you could post on IG Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts.
  • For articles, you could post on a blog, Medium, Substack, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube community tab, X, and Threads.
  • And for YouTube? Well… I guess that one is pretty self explanatory…

Even typing all this isn’t going to simplify anything for anybody, and may even make the problem worse because it may open some eyes to all the possibilities out there.

So my advice if you’re just getting started?

Pick the type of content you like to create, post to the platforms that support it, and lead them to your funnel whether that’s an email list or a product directly.

If you need help with this, readers of my daily emails get offered multiple ways I can point you in the right direction.
