One thing I spend both too much time and not enough time doing is playing online chess against people all over the world.
Most nights, I play a handful of 3-5 minute games.
Sometimes I’ll win 5 games in a row.
Sometimes I’ll lose 5 games in a row.
Most of the time, it’s somewhere in the middle.
And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that there’s always more to learn.
In some cases, your very first move can dictate the entire game.
And in other cases, you can be getting stomped for 10 moves, then your opponent makes one bad move and you win.
But the interesting part about this 1500 year old board game?
Smart people have already figured out all the base principles and what to do in most positions, so if you keep studying winning principles and applying what you learn…
You will get better.
The same thing goes for selling digital products on the internet, especially in the beginning.
I spent months just trying different stuff and had nothing to show for it, mainly because my version of “trying stuff” was buying info products, reading some of them, and moving on with my life.
It wasn’t until I came across the base principles of…
- Building an audience
- Making good offers
…that I was able to make consistent sales.
But even then, there’s always room for improvement.
You can always get better at building an audience and you can always get better at making offers.
Not every strategy wins 100% of the time…
The goal is to simply win more than you lose.
This is how the top chess players got to where they are, and this is how online businesses are built.
On that note, just writing all of this inspired me to sneak in a few extra games today…
Talk soon,
-Gabe
