Way back in 2011, I was burned by 2 different uh… “multiple tier marketing” companies where I spent hundreds of dollars and didn’t make a single sale.
You’d figure I learned some kind of lesson from that…
But nope.
I was still searching the internet for different options, different products, and different comp plans that would put me on the path to freedom.
Well, it turned out I didn’t want to be a soap and vitamin salesman, and I didn’t want to sell janky video phones even though the company was endorsed by our now 47th US President.
However, I didn’t mind selling online marketing tools like web hosting, email marketing, etc. and getting paid in one of those classic “you get two and they get two” models.
So that’s exactly what I did.
I already had a blog on my full name dot com, and a YouTube channel to go with it.
So I started publishing a whole lot more content about various companies, marketing tools, and online business tips to get visitors from Google and YouTube.
And I offered a free report to get people to join my email list, which was essentially a 6 page sales letter to join my team.
Did it work right away?
Well, no… not exactly.
I kept posting for months before anything happened.
But one random day I made a sale!
Then another one.
And another one.
And eventually I got to the point where people were joining my team at various price points every week and I was getting fast start bonuses on every member that joined.
I was making a couple hundred bucks a month along with a bit of recurring revenue which was so cool to me.
Then one day I got a phone call because I had my number available to people who signed up…
And that’s when everything changed…
That call was essentially to vet the quality of the company I was selling for and my level of seriousness on the biz.
I didn’t oversell it or anything I just told this individual I was a big fan of the products and the comp plan was working for me.
And the result?
He signed up and brought over 50 people along with him, so I was getting paid on every single one of those members.
And just like that, I went from a couple hundred to over $550 a month with a single phone call which also put me over $1k in earnings and kept me on the leaderboards for months.
Naturally, that industry was under fire for a lot of FTC stuff because of some bad players and eventually the company dropped the whole team based pay plan…
So I was cut off from all that sweet, sweet monthly revenue from my team’s efforts…
But I did learn something valuable from that whole experience:
If you keep putting yourself out there as someone who can help people solve a problem, eventually you’ll be discovered by your ideal customers which makes it a whole lot easier to sell.
And you won’t catch me getting involved in that kind of business ever again…
(I actually learned my lesson this time)
But the marketing method is exactly the same as what works today:
- Post content to get attention
- Build an email list to deepen connection
- Make problem solving offers to get paid
The trick is figuring out how to put it all together…
That way you actually enjoy what you do.
For example, if you like writing and want to sell courses, maybe don’t force yourself to make videos and sell coaching just because some millionaire said it was the way to go lol
