One piece of advice that’s becoming a bit cliche in the online business space is to produce more content than you consume.
It’s easy to understand and easy to remember, and is generally good advice if you’re building.
The problem is it’s also easy to get stuck in the habit of only doing and never learning.
I’ll give you two quick examples:
- Martha and I got our second dog last year, and while she’s doing great, our 6 year old pup decided to stop listening as well as she used to. So I decided to hop on Beckman’s Dog Training YouTube channel to figure out why, and lo and behold… the one who needed a training refresher was ME, not our dog. Re-implemented some basic obedience training, repositioning myself as the leader, and it only took a few days to get back on track.
- Despite being historically bad at the game, I’m a big fan of chess and play online most days of the week. I’ll win some, lose some more, and never really made progress on my ELO score. Recently, I started watching one short GothamChess video breaking down winning and/or losing games before I play and now I’m winning 60-70% of my games.
Even though I’m taking care of my dogs every day and playing chess often, I found myself getting a bit lazy with them.
When it comes to online business…
I see the same thing happen to creators every single day.
They just keep posting and sometimes lose the plot because they find certain posts get more likes, which tend to be less practical or helpful to their ideal customer.
Likes? You can buy likes.
You can’t buy impact.
But you can buy things to help you get better at making an impact, such as the Secrets Trilogy by Russell Brunson, Crypto Copywriting Secrets by Ben Settle, and The Ultimate Sales Letter by Dan Kennedy.
These 3 will help you dramatically improve your thinking behind the content and systems you put out, and I often go back to them for refreshers.
Back to producing vs consuming…
I still think it’s important to focus on publishing way more than learning, even in the early stages.
However, even after you find your groove it’s simply smart to continue expanding your knowledge over time, even if you end up reading or watching the same things over and over again.
As far as the actionable steps to getting started with your own digital product business you can run in your spare time…
